I wish to express my condolences to the more than one billion people around the world who today have lost their spiritual leader. I will remember His Holiness Pope Francis as a voice for peace and reflection in a world gearing up for war. Francis has been regarded by many as a progressive pope, with a focus on social justice, environmental engagement, openness, and compassion. His advocacy of simplicity and humility has been an important and welcome message in a time marked by overconsumption and self‑preoccupation. I send my heartfelt sympathy to the Catholic Church, to all believers mourning the loss of a beloved spiritual guide, and to His Holiness the new pope, who will heed the call of his office in these challenging and unsettled times.
